The Cooperative Nature School at The Trustees Moose Hill Farm believes in the benefits of child-centered, nature-based learning. Through effective observation strategies and through questions children present, teachers come to understand the unique characteristics each child brings. We believe that a child’s interest, strengths and needs drive learning in the domain areas of language, mathematics, arts, science and technology, social studies, fine and gross motor skill, and social emotional growth. The curriculum philosophy is aligned with the Massachusetts Curriculum Frameworks for Pre-Kindergarten to Twelve. The developmentally based and child directed curriculum is a fluid, dynamic curriculum.
The critical role of the environment is also very important. Educators will facilitate outdoor experiences along with open-ended activities in a project approach. Documentation through examples of children’s work hung around halls and classrooms and daily blog posts to families full of pictures make learning visible, spark discussion, extend ideas and further learning into the home and beyond.
The Cooperative Nature School at The Trustees Moose Hill Farm will be licensed by the Massachusetts’ Department of Early Education and Care (DEEC) and specifies the educator/child ratios as well as the square footage required for each child, which in turn determines the maximum number of children in each classroom and in the school.
The School Year Program
The school operates a program for three to five-day full-time students from September to July. We offer a rich, developmentally appropriate and balanced schedule with a range of activities and experiences from 7:30AM to 5:30 PM. Every day we have a staff of 4 experienced, certified educators for our 30 students. Children need to be 3.5 to 6 years old to attend. It is possible for a child to attend The Cooperative School for 1 or 2 years before moving on to kindergarten.
The Summer Program
We also offer a Summer Program of full day classes for seven weeks during July and August. The Summer Program is separately enrolled and open to children not enrolled in the school year progra
The Daily Schedule will follow the same routine as our school year program with some extra water fun splashed in! Children may arrive between 7:30 AM and 8:30 AM and stay until 5:30 PM.
The Summer Program has a complete schedule of developmentally appropriate activities backed by an emergent curriculum. Our Summer Program is always open to new friends who want to learn and play in July and August.
We will publish a daily blog post during rest describing the children’s day. The weekly curriculum and daily activities will also be posted on the classroom blog. Every day each child comes to school already dressed in a bathing suit with play clothes over it, sunscreened and ready to learn and play. Each morning, you will bring a beach bag with a beach towel and a full change of clothes including underwear, a second bathing suit and a set of shoes and socks so children can be comfortable during the day.
